MAHOORA TENTED SAFARI CAMPS | YALA • WILPATTU • UDAWALAWE | CURRENT, FULL MANAGEMENT

High-End Glamping at the Edge of Sri Lanka’s Wild

Mahoora transforms a national-park stay into a complete wildlife experience. Spacious ensuite safari tents, naturalist-led game drives, thoughtful hosting and atmospheric dining bring comfort and interpretation into the landscapes that guests have travelled to discover.

Mahoora tent accommodation

More Than a Tent Beside a National Park

Mahoora is built around the hours before, during and after a safari. A professional naturalist helps guests read the landscape rather than simply pass through it. The camp team creates a considered rhythm of refreshments, meals, walks and time around the fire, while the tent provides a private place to rest within the sounds and textures of the dry-zone forest.

The name Mahoora derives from “Maha-Hoora”, described by the brand as “The Great One”. That sense of being personally hosted in the wilderness informs the experience without separating it from the realities of camp life: natural ground, changing weather, insects, wildlife sounds and limited urban infrastructure are part of the setting.

Mahoora Yala

Set within ten acres of private dry-zone forest near Yala National Park, the camp offers access towards the less-frequented Katagamuwa side of the park. It suits travellers drawn to Yala’s mosaic of forest, scrub, wetlands and open country, and those hoping to explore beyond the most heavily used routes when park operations and the selected programme allow.

Mahoora Wilpattu

An intimate camp beside a lake and bush forest near Wilpattu’s southern boundary. The tents are spread for privacy, while the park entrance is approximately seven kilometres away. Wilpattu rewards patient observation across forest tracks and natural villus, making this the collection’s strongest choice for spacious wilderness and a slower safari rhythm.

Mahoora Udawalawe

Udawalawe’s open grasslands, reservoir edges and dry-zone habitat make it particularly compelling for travellers hoping to observe Asian elephants and an accessible range of wildlife. The camp is well suited to first-time safari guests, families and itineraries crossing Sri Lanka’s southern interior.

Safari Tents Designed for Living in the Wild

The Mahoora tent is deliberately more generous than a conventional camping tent. A full-sized bed and soft linen sit within the sleeping area; an outer living space gives guests room to pause between activities; and a private ensuite brings the practical comforts needed after a dusty game drive. This remains genuine tented accommodation. Canvas responds to rain, wind, heat and the sounds beyond it. Paths can be uneven, wildlife and insects are part of the environment, and lighting is intentionally restrained.

Guests who understand that balance tend to value Mahoora most: comfort is present, but the wilderness has not been edited out.

Naturalists Who Add Meaning to Every Sighting

A memorable safari is shaped not only by what appears, but by how the encounter is read. Mahoora’s naturalists and game-drive teams look for tracks, alarm calls, movement and habitat clues, then place each sighting within a broader ecological story. Guest interests, leopards, elephants, birds, photography or a child’s first safari, should be discussed on arrival so the team can shape realistic priorities. Wildlife remains wild. No species or sighting can be guaranteed, and responsible positioning must take precedence over chasing or crowding an animal.

Dining Under a Wider Sky

Mahoora dining is designed as part of the wilderness experience rather than a restaurant transplanted into it. Meals may unfold outdoors, beside the fire or beneath the trees, with the camp atmosphere changing between daylight and night. Menus combine Sri Lankan character with broader guest preferences, and the team can discuss dietary requirements before arrival.

Who Mahoora Suits

Wildlife Travellers

Guests who want their accommodation, guiding and safari rhythm to work as one coherent experience rather than treating the park as a brief excursion from a conventional hotel.

Couples and Honeymooners

Families

Flexible planning, learning through a naturalist and time together in the wild can make Mahoora meaningful for children and adults. Age, supervision, vehicle arrangements and adjoining-tent requests should be discussed before booking.

Photographers and Birders

Guests with specific interests can request a more focused approach, subject to location, season, guide availability, light, park rules and wildlife movement.

A Lighter Footprint in Sensitive Places

Mahoora’s operating approach also highlights solar power, reduced artificial lighting, avoidance of single-use plastic, on-site waste-management practices and work with neighbouring communities. These commitments matter because a wilderness stay should help protect the landscape on which the experience depends.

Booking and Inclusions

Arrival and Transfers

Each camp occupies a nature-based setting outside an urban centre. Confirm arrival instructions, transfer times and the final meeting point before travel. Road and weather conditions can affect journey times.

Health, Mobility and Children

Uneven ground, steps into safari vehicles, warm conditions and outdoor movement are intrinsic to the stay. Guests should disclose mobility, medical, dietary and child-safety needs before booking so suitability can be assessed honestly.

What to Bring

Neutral lightweight clothing, closed walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle and binoculars are useful. Follow the camp’s current packing advice and park requirements.

Managed by Bliss Spaces

Mahoora Tented Safari Camps are current full-management properties within the Bliss Spaces portfolio. The relationship demonstrates specialist capability across remote operations, naturalist-led guest experiences, food and beverage, people, sustainability, sales, revenue and multi-location brand delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Mahoora camp should I choose?

Choose Yala for diverse big-game country, Wilpattu for scale and a quieter forest-and-villu landscape, or Udawalawe for open habitat and strong elephant appeal. The best fit also depends on season, route and personal interests.

Are safaris included?

Some packages include game drives and related services; others may differ. Check the exact inclusions shown in the live online booking system before confirming.

Do the tents have private bathrooms?

Mahoora safari tents are described with private ensuite facilities including a washbasin, flushable commode and hot/cold shower. Confirm the current tent category when booking.

Can wildlife sightings be guaranteed?

No. Wildlife movement is natural and unpredictable. Skilled guiding can improve interpretation and use of time, but no ethical operator can guarantee a particular animal.

Is Mahoora suitable for children?

Families are welcome, but suitability depends on age, supervision, climate, safari duration and individual needs. Discuss these before booking.

Is this the same as staying in a hotel?

No. Mahoora provides high-end glamping comforts in an authentic outdoor environment. Canvas, natural sounds, insects, uneven ground and changing weather remain part of the experience.

How do I obtain the current rate?

Use Book Now. Live rates, offers, camp availability and conditions are supplied by the Mahoora online booking system.
