A Place Named for a Lake in the Sky
In Sinhala, “ahas” means sky and “pokuna” means pond or pool. The name refers to a rain-fed lake high in these hills and to the settlement that once existed around it before the forest returned. The camp now occupies a landscape where traces of human history, wildlife movement and wilderness sit unusually close together.
Ahaspokuna was established in December 2016 as a private wildlife reserve and walking-safari camp. Its proposition is deliberately small and personal: guests do not observe the landscape only through a vehicle window; they enter it at walking pace with trained naturalists and trackers.
